No photography, no large bags, security checks at every entrance — the rules are stricter than at most museums for good reason. What to know before you walk in so nothing slows you down at the door.
The Prado has stricter rules than most museums because its 17th-century pigments are extremely sensitive to light and humidity. The two surprises for first-time visitors are no photography in the permanent collection and no bags larger than a daypack. See our visitors guide and accessibility page for related info.
A short list — the rest is normal museum etiquette
Photos and video are not allowed in the permanent collection at any time. Pencil sketching is permitted in some galleries — ask a guard if unsure.
Daypacks are fine; backpacks larger than 30×40 cm and any large totes must be checked at the cloakroom or in €1 lockers.
Airport-style security at every entrance with metal detectors and bag screening. Allow 5–10 extra minutes during peak hours.
Eating and drinking are limited to Café Prado. Water bottles must stay in your bag throughout the visit.
